With 2 inches of snow overnight winter has arrived in my community. Tennessee added 8,000 new virus cases in the last 24 hours. Many of the schools are going back to school online. Vanderbilt the big hospital in Nashville is cancelling all elective procedures. Restaurants are reducing capacity again. The new vaccine is supposedly on it's way. This Christmas season should prove interesting.

Our national lockdown ends tomorrow, I think the 5 days break they have announced for Christmas is going to backfire badly.

Australia is almost covid free. Most of the few new cases are people returning from overseas. Most restrictions have ended. Covid has had zero impact on me, partly through luck, partly through good management.

Covid is everywhere here. The worse since it all started. While my husband and I remain Covid free we are seriously considering locking the front gate and putting ourself into a self imposed quarantine again. We have plenty of provisions and he is restocking livestock feed for several months. The state is going to do what it will and we just choose not to play.

We have reluctantly not to have any family gatherings for Christmas this year, both of our large hospitals are overwhelmed with Corona victims, there are NO ITU beds left

My community is still blanketed with snow and an extreme cold front setting in. They are opening shelters in the cities for the homeless and begging for help serving hot meals. Covid 19 hospitalizations are up 1000 cases over last month already. 5693 New cases of Covid according to the health dept in the last 24 hours. Today it seems like everyone I know has Covid right now. I got a call from one of my girlfriends yesterday who is sick with it. My husband and I have gone back into a self imposed quarantine. Back to curbside grocery pickup also. We will go into public spaces for emergencies only. Thus far 2 of my children, my son in law and 3 of my 7 grandchildren have had it, all recovering well though.

Wow DD, I don't know anyone who has had covid. But if I was in your situation, I'd be self quarantining as well. I saw this coming late last year, 4 months before the sheeple got wind of it, and topped off my supplies to permit the 8 of us to self isolate for 12 months.

I have really no idea what is going on in my community. I am not getting out and talking to people right now, trying to weather this wave of COVID, and I don't listen to the local news.

I saw this coming late last year, 4 months before the sheeple got wind of it, and topped off my supplies to permit the 8 of us to self isolate for 12 months. At times like this I am very thankful that I am a prepper. My husband and I are truly blessed that we are both retired and can stay home easily. We have plenty of supplies and quarantined when this all first began. Things eased up for awhile and we ventured out occasionally still being extremely careful. We have maintained and even added to our preps during this whole pandemic fearing that we would have to self quarantine again. Most of our adult children live in other states. We have missed seeing them all regularly but we decided as a family that they would avoid family gatherings during major outbreaks. None of the kids want to be responsible for giving Mom and Dad the virus. We talk often and they let the grandkids visit us on the computer. My son in law just buried his 90 year old grandfather from Covid. Times are hard right now. We shall get through it though.

I watch the news out of Nashville several times a week. It is the nearest large city and helps to know what is going on in the state. I talk to family, friends and neighbors on the phone regularly. Get the small local paper every Wednesday in the mailbox. Listen to the local radio station daily great old rock music and community news. But like you we are trying to weather this wave as well so we are back to curbside pickups only and minimal public contact. Last 2 weeks it has just exploded here. I have a feeling this may be our new norm for awhile. Rolling waves of the virus after holidays etc. Christmas, New Years, Easter people are not going to give them up.

Still a little snow on the ground. Warm up to 50 today and rain moving in tonight. In the Nashville news Vice President Pence is in Memphis today promoting vaccine for Covid. 4,099 new cases and 50 death in the last 24 hours according to the Health Dept. Election officials certify Trump's win in Tennessee yesterday. The White House recommended that TN impose "public health orders". Good luck with that because the people won't obey them. And everyone is out of toilet paper again (except me ) Meanwhile on my side of the gate the ducks have had a ball in the snow, my husband put up my suet feeders for the birds outside my window and they all look fat and sassy. Ham and corn chowder for dinner. The new seed catalogs are trickling in and I have plenty to dream over. I continue to study in my class on herbs and my knitting is coming along quite nicely. Stay safe DD

Vice President Pence visited the state yesterday and met with the governor. The big news is mostly Covid related as the state promotes the future vaccines. My husband is going to renew the tags on the truck today and while out grab some more groceries curbside. These days we try to limit trips and limit exposure. We were fortunate to be able to renew his drivers license by mail which saved a trip out and standing in line.

Foggy this morning and a muddy mess outside from the recent snow and rain. Think I will put up my Christmas tree today. Spaghetti sauce in the crockpot. My husband said that when he picked up our curbside pickup yesterday Walmart parking lot was packed. Got most of my grocery list curbside though. They did take a couple things off. Things not available online that I noticed toilet paper, paper towels, canning supplies, cleaning supplies. Topped up on dog food and chicken food also.
Stay safe DD

Brutally cold day today with sleet falling and we are snug and warm though. Big pot of cream potato and ham soup on the back of the stove with plenty of my homegrown potatoes, green onions, and garlic. I am drying some sour dough starter and making ghee on the stove. Skillet cornbread in the oven. Pack of beagles just went by looks like one of the neighbors is rabbit hunting. A quiet and peaceful winter day in the country. I am working on knitting and dreaming over my seed catalogs. I got a couple new ones in over the weekend. Stay safe DD

Robin we could use a break in the brutal cold temps. A chance to catch up on outside chores etc.

Brutally cold day today with sleet falling... OK. What is sleet? No one seems to like it. Is it like jagged hailstones or something? (It got down to 55F here last night. Chilly!)

Sleet usually leaves the cloud in the form of snow that melts as it passes through warm layers of air during its descent. The raindrops and partially melted snowflakes then freeze in the colder layers nearer the earth before striking the ground as tiny pellets of ice, which usually bounce. They collect on roadways and sidewalks making them slicker than snot!
Here we also have frozen fog which is awful too. It is literally frozen ice crystals floating in the air. Particularly thick around water and notorious for freezing bridges and overpasses.

Sleet is fundamentally different from hail and forms at lower altitudes from melted snowflakes that clump together. It is basically like frozen raindrops. Not as large as hail, but because it always falls in very cold weather (unlike hail) it can contribute to icing on cars and roads. Winter storms often have a mixture of rain, sleet and snow at the front, then changing to snow as the front moves in.
