Open the pod bay door please HAL.
Lots of people in Colorado lost control of their own A/C. Smart thermostats were remotely locked by, I assume, the power company.
I know that all the advertising these days is about supercalifragidoozits which can multichannel and control everything all from one spot but this is a wake up. For anything, a manual on/off switch is your best bet. Preferably behind a locked door. And if you want to get intense make sure it is covered by direct fire.
This is part of the electronic age but it works both ways. Grocery store rewards programs, credit cards, online payment methods and similar schemes can save you a bit of money and maybe give you freebies BUT they also track everything about you. If you do something which is all of a sudden 'verboten' then you can expect a response. Either freezing of accounts, fines, being locked out of programs or if you are really bad, a knock on the door from the 'Stasi' equivalent.
Maintain control of your own systems and stop spreading information about yourself all over the place. Search your name and see how much info is in the public domain about you. And any info that corporations have is easily available to govs because it is a big cabal.

Using a handwarmer to fool the thermostat. Brilliant.
