If and when TSHTF, the mental state of many will not be good. My 2nd major was psychology and I have independently studied it since then. How people think and react under pressure fascinates me.
Why can one person suffer repeated unimaginable tragedies throughout life and come out “normal”, while another cannot seem to get past the fact they did not get a pony on their 5th birthday, never forgive their parents and let the resentment from that miniscule event control their future decisions?
Who have we chosen to ally ourselves in a pressure situation?
In a SHTF event or TEOTWAKI, it will benefit us to know both ourselves and the people we are choosing to associate with.
The Unthinkable: Who Survives When Disaster Strikes — And Why: by Amanda Ripley is very insightful.
Excerpt:
“Listening to survivors, I realized we'd been holding dress rehearsals for a play without knowing any of our lines. Our government had warned us to be prepared, but it hadn't told us why. In New Orleans, after Hurricane Katrina, I learned more from regular people on street corners than I learned covering any homeland security conference.
“In firehouses and brain research labs, I learned that if we get to know our disaster personalities before the disaster, we might have a slightly better chance of surviving. At the very least, we'll expunge some of the unknowns from our imaginations, and we'll uncover secrets about ourselves.”
The book has been out for a while but, if you have not read it,

It amazes me every time when people don't have the mental ability to be deal with emergency situations.in which at least a good deal of them are smart, and capable of dealing with a lot of situations.take February of 2021 for example.. subzero temp's and no power for 5 day's. people froze simply because they weren't prepared for it.and some froze simply because they refused to do what was needed just to stay warm. I don't remember the name of the reports.but two government departments did a study to find out what would happen if earth took a direct hit from a emp that came from the sun.. think Carrington event.in those reports.they state that 90% of the people would die by the end of one year.to many people have been dumbed down and/or to dependant on the supply chain.

90% that is what was written of in One Second After by William Forstchen. Some friends of ours escaped from Romania in the 80's and lived through the turmoil before and my husband gave Dan the book. He gave it back the following week and said "Yep. The book hit the nail on the head. That is how things go when all hell breaks loose. We lived it."
I think, unless you have had some kind of training to change it, you either think clearly or do not. Your brain just takes over at least that has been my experience.
I have been in several emergency situations. The first time (Tornado age 9) when my mind flipped the switch, it was like all emotion evaporated and only analysis, logic and reason remained. Frankly, I was more scared after the emergency passed regarding what happened to my thought process, than I was during the actual crisis.
How calm and calculating I become was, and is scary though, as an adult, I see it now as a strength. It just kind of freaks everyone else out. I have been told that is not "normal", that for most people without specialized training (ER doctors, military, first responders), it goes the other way, all emotion, no rational thought. IDK.
