Expert: 90% of U.S. Population Could Die if a Pulse Event Hits the Power Grid When a large electromagnetic pulse (EMP) or geomagnetic disturbance (GMD) event occurs—which, according to Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), there is “100% certainty” will happen at some time in the future—as many as 9 out of 10 people in the U.S. could die. Johnson, chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs, posed questions to witnesses testifying on Capitol Hill before his committee. He asked R. James Woolsley, chairman of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and former director of the Central Intelligence Agency, what would happen to society if the electrical grid were to be down for an extended period of time, such as a year or two, following an EMP event? Woolsley responded, “It’s briefly dealt with in the commission report of [2008]. There are essentially two estimates on how many people would die from hunger, from starvation, from lack of water, and from social disruption. One estimate is that within a year or so, two-thirds of the United States population would die. The other estimate is that within a year or so, 90% of the U.S. population would die. We’re talking about total devastation. We’re not talking about just a regular catastrophe.” www.powermag.com/expect-death-if-pulse-event-hits-power-grid/

How do I prspare for an EMP burst? What steps should I take to get ready for this? Become less dependent on the system. Find ways to provide your own food, water, security, medical care etc. Ways that don't rely on the grid.

like frostbite said. become less dependant on the power grid, in everyway possible. i've only become a little less dependant on it.

yeah I know about the Carrington effect. in which it's a good example to what could happen.. but as far as which most and likely happen. man made or natural will happen first. I don't know. but yet, I won't put it past certain countries sending nucaluar missiles to take out the power grids

I'm not interested in Cause, just Effect.
I don't waste time or energy thinking about what may cause the grid to go down, just how I will survive if it does. Electricity is a luxury for me, it makes my life easier, but it isn't essential. I got by without it at my retreat for years, and whilst my solar panels running the lights, fridge and recharging my tools is great, it won't kill me if they fail.

I can't argue with that. Less dependent means less likely to be effected. I try and keep spares in a faraday cage of everthing I am capable of fixing with the hope that I might be able to have some luxuries after an event. Hiding the fact that I have them is also a consideration, because we all know what happens when people find out that you have something they do not.
