I found this posted on another site and gave me some food for thought! I think this "Great Burning" is very feasible. Not sure how you would prepare other than keeping your property clean of fire fuel and possibly maintaining a small tractor and disk for firebreaks.
Every few years I bring this theory of mine up...... I call it "The Great Burning"
In a full blown Grid down SHTF situation the unprepared lemmings will begin evacuating the cities both big and small to "Head for the Hills" aka the wilderness surrounding said cities within a week or two.
We are talking about MILLIONS of people in all corners of the country heading into the woods in a desperate attempt to escape burning, rioting cities and to try and find some form of wild food via fishing and shooting everything that moves.
With tens of millions of completely starved, dehydrated, irrational and inexperienced campers with no training in regard to safe fire control/maintenance building millions of camp fires to keep warm and feel safe......... It will only be a few days before most wilderness areas of the US are engulfed in flames.
With no fire fighters to try and keep them at bay (not that they could in this situation) these fires will become firestorms of biblical proportion...... Multi-Million acre fires blazing all over the country at the same time, eventually the fires will be so huge and intense that no amount of moisture or rainy climate will be able to stop them. The intense heat will spare no place as even most suburbs will be engulfed.
Edit: Adding this from my other post for some thought......
When you read my Great Burning theory its important to get the current state of forest fires out of your heads for this one. Current forest fires give little or no parallels to what I am proposing....I'm not talking about a random lightening strike fire in a wet forest.....Or some random guy flicking a lit smoke out his window....... Rain wont stop this, a few acres of fields around your house wont stop the 75 mph 650 degree winds from hitting your buildings.
Keep in mind I am talking about thousands of localized fires spreading, coalescing, and eventually becoming multi million acre fire storms...... I am talking about flaming hot, hurricane force, fire storm winds that will dry out the dampest of forests almost instantly and burst them into flames. Once a forest fire gets big enough they can melt snow and burst all the tree tops into flames quickly..... and that's currently....... We only see it in a small scale now because thousands of guys are out there fighting it..... and aircraft are doing nonstop fire retardant drops 24/7. Take all that away and imagine thousands or even MILIIONS of lemming "lightening" strikes all over the country at once.... without the rain in many cases.... Think about it.
