As all of us watch and read the events surrounding the recent storms and outages in Texas what have you observed that has changed your preps in any way? What words of wisdom would you impart to new preppers about dealing with an event of this type again?

I need to pull my finger out and get a small gas heater. Think simple and be rational. If you live in an area where an event like this is rare, don't go spending all your money on 'stuff' get the simple things right first, have plenty of blankets and hot water bottles, be prepared to reduce your living space to make it easier to heat. Lag any pipes that could be prone to freezing and check you know where your stopcock is. Have a stash of bottled water. Have some sort of alternative toileting facilities. Camping gear is great, sleeping bags, stoves, lights and even luggable loos! Have a stash of foods that you can eat straight from the tin. Make sure your home insurance covers water damage, burst pipes etc. As an example I can remember an uncle who lived in Canada losing power for a few days. He put up their canvas tent in the lounge and they stayed in that. Smaller space, easier to heat.

Sonic last year our furnace went out in January and had to be replaced. The unit had to be back ordered and we were on a waiting list to have it installed. We used our fireplace and my husband and I simply pulled a mattress and laid it on the floor in front of the fireplace to sleep every night. We do have a few small electric heaters that we ran in the bathrooms occasionally to warm them up because of the pipes. Lots of quilts and snuggling and we were toasty. Of course we still had electric and running water. Our pipes are insulated super well though. We survived happily like that for about a week.

If it counts, it has prompted me to buy another hot water bottle. On a serious note, an alternative heat source is really the only thing missing in our preps.

WAY TO MANY were without power. to many without water. some still without water. plumbers are over whelmed. to many buiesness shelves were empty. gas stations had no fuel.. and on the most part. I'm prepared for that. but yet. no where near enough for my liking. so I've been preparing for the next time that happens.
