I have apparently experienced two earthquakes in my lifetime. One sounded like a jet taking off in the distance and I think I was driving a truck when the second hit and I just thought it was a pothole in the road. Not exactly 'end of the world' experiences!
What are the experiences of others? From my limited research, the ground will move. This is a bit freaky to me! Does it move up and down or side to side or both? Things fall over and buildings break? A friend had a small landslide on their property and the most noticeable thing was the noise. Are earthquakes loud?
Any experiences or info appreciated.

I was in Taiwan sleeping on the fifth floor of an apartment building. I thought it was a tornado at first when I woke up. There was noise but I think it was the building itself making the noise from getting shaken. The head of my bed was banging against the wall. When I realized what it was I ran down the stairs and into the middle of the street.
I wondered why nobody else was getting out of the buildings. I called my fiance and she told me to go back to bed, no big deal, only a 6.5, LOL. Their buildings are built for it. Here where I live there would have been widespread catastrophic damage.
