Australia 27,750 cases, 907 deaths, most of those caused by government stupidity in allowing an infected cruise ship to disembark without any medical checks. Population 25.5m
The US has 13 times our population, but 390 times more cases and 270 times more deaths.

They did shut down travel from China early on. Then shut down travel from other countries as those countries became infected. Mandatory quarantine for all incoming passengers. They did full contact tracing. They wore masks early on. Anyone with symptoms were required to notify the authorities. 7 deaths total, and it has been months since the last death.

I believe had Australia closed it's borders earlier and put those cruise ships in quarantine, that we could have achieved something like Taiwan has. Instead we have had severe lockdowns in some areas and put ourselves in huge debt trying to keep our economy afloat. I expect Aussies will have to deal with years of cutbacks to govt spending and probably an increase in our GST to manage that debt.

Some US info. www.heritage.org/data-visualizations/public-health/covid-19-deaths-by-age/"According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, COVID-19 is deadliest among older populations. In fact, through November 18, 92 percent of COVID-19 deaths nationwide have occurred among those ages 55 or older. Only 0.2 percent were younger than 25. This trend can also be found on the state level." "CDC data also show that Americans, regardless of age group, are far more likely to die of something other than COVID-19. Even among those in the most heavily impacted age group (85 and older), only 9.5 percent of all deaths since February 2020 were due to COVID-19."

A bit of a trashy article but worth a read IMO. Points out that more testing equals more cases, simple but overlooked, but deaths are relatively stable or decreasing. I've been saying infection rates are highly dependent on testing rates since March. That's how China got their reported infection rates down - by not testing. We have no way of actually knowing how many people are infected. It's just not possible to count in any meaningful way, especially since there are so many asymptomatic carriers. And testing is only accurate if done at the right stage of infection. What is possible is to count is deaths, even though that has been corrupted. But at least it's something that is more objective than infection rates.

This is the craziest virus. My granddaughter (19) was infected when she went to college. Caught it from her roommate and found out after she came home for a visit. My daughters household was quarantined for 14 days. No one else caught it despite living in the same house.
Then all the younger children went back to school and they both returned to work. Youngest granddaughter (5) then was infected in kindergarten and again the house was quarantined. Both my daughter and son in law tested positive with syptoms as well as the 5 year old.
During this whole time my 2 grandsons ( 9 and 11) have both tested negative and have not shown ay symptoms at all. My daughter lives in fear that they will eventually be sent home from school and they will have to quarantine for the 3rd time.

"""We have no way of actually knowing how many people are infected. Bill replied It's just not possible to count in any meaningful way, especially since there are so many asymptomatic carriers. And testing is only accurate if done at the right stage of infection."""Then surely if we accept that no one knows how many people are infected , and how many people are CARRIERS but not displaying symptoms then as preppers surely it makes sense to react as if EVERYONE is a possible threat to us and thus we must protect ourselves as best we can. Both in the US and UK there are many many millions of people simply ignoring the outbreak or denying it exists, plus many who think the disease is an attack on their " rights" and refuse to cooperate in fighting this pandemic, so wew must treat everyone as a clear and present danger. In our little village one " nay sayer" who refused to mask up when he kept going into our village shop found himself getting a good thrashing off other villagers.

Geez, bill. Are you just a tad fanatical? In some posts you say the whole world is being turned into a concentration camp, and in the next everyone must do as the gov says just because. As far as I can tell, if you aren't coughing you aren't spreading it. What about curfews? Any actual medical reason why you are more likely to get the virus at 10:01pm? Yelling and screaming at people at a riot is OK but sitting in church is bad? Maybe, just maybe it is time to turn the TV off and look at some medical data. The above links are a good start.

A Vanderbilt study released last month showed that counties without mask mandates had significantly higher COVID-19 death rates. The study also showed those counties are largely rural, and Tennessee’s rural residents are generally older, less healthy and have less access to health care — three factors that exacerbated the virus.
