Despite shortages and empty shelves there are still holiday sales out there worth taking advantage of. My husband picked up a frozen turkey at Kroger for 47 cents a pound. He will breast it out for cutlets and debone and grind the rest but it could be canned as well. They have canned soups for 49 cents a can and canned vegetables for the same. Dry spaghetti for less than 50 cents a pound is hard to find and keeps forever. He bought another 10 pounds. Mac and cheese for 70 cents a box. Cheese and butter also on sale. He also picked up a couple hams at Walmart on sale for 1.98 a pound spiral sliced. We always are looking for sales this time of year to expand our preps.
Stay safe shopping DD

Sales are great. Once you find items you like, keep an eye on them. When they are discounted, buy more. Very easy to build up quite a stockpile for less $$$. 99% of my spaghetti has been less than 50c/pound by buying when it is cheap. But I haven't seen Spam on sale for months . I must confess to getting a bit 'buy-happy', there are a lot more of some items in my preps ATM because they have been cheap for a while. (Note to self: 'try to restrain yourself!'). You can also approach the managers of stores and ask them to order full flats or wholesale cartons of items. They are usually happy to do this as it gives a lot of turnover for little handling. Some big-brand store managers won't do it because they are employees not owners, but it can't hurt to ask.

A great deal of my preps have been sale items as well. Every grocery order I try to add any sale items that we like to the pantry. You are right in that it does not take long to build up quite a bit of food for cheap that way. Far cheaper than buying the survival foods in buckets etc... Between the preserving a large garden and sale items we are able to maintain a large working pantry year round and long term dehydrated foods and dry goods for many year to come. In the US right now most stores are running sales on turkeys and/or hams, canned vegetables, baking supplies such as sugar and flour, and butter and some dairy such as cream cheese. Many of the traditional foods of an American Thanksgiving and Christmas Meal. Restraint is definitely a necessity though or you end up with huge amount of overstock in one item What goes on sale this time of year in Aus??
