I agree, rationing would need to be controlled somehow, and without societal controls in place it would be a free for all.

The shop owners and staff would just be ignored (or get mugged).
I saw several his morning without masks, it quite surprised me.

It is, and yet I know a medical person that says it makes little or no difference, and is more of a placatory measure (said person believes we should have had a longer lockdown to break it).

I think the general synopsis is that a mask will only prevent the wearer passing infection to someone close to, but because we are socially distancing the effectiveness of the mask is removed. So, obviously, a surgeon is only a meter away from the patient, and then it is effective.
There is also a fairly powerful argument that social distancing is, in itself, not terribly effective, as sneezing, for example, propels germs across an entire room, but then I see masks as a preventative for that.
I suspect the only safe way is to keep isolated.
Incidentally have you seen this morning's "advice", allegedly from the government? Allegedly it is being recommend that one wear a mask to have safe sex, yep, really, work that one out. Unsafe to face a sexual partner, but apparently no risk in taking up the rear end - who comes up with this stuff? -the mind boggles.

This pretty much sums it up: Masks can help but you need to follow certain procedures for them to do any good. There is no point wearing a mask if you then catch the disease from the mask. The info on the procedures is freely available but they are tedious to follow. So people just wear a bandana over their face and pretend they are safe! The best advice: "STOP...TOUCHING...YOUR...FACE!"

Good point Kelabar.
I suppose the mask prevents face touching, and we don't all anti-bad as regularly as we should.
In the UK the relaxing of lockdown has been accompanied by many people relaxing over the virus risk. I travelled "up country" the other week and was aghast too ee the lack of social distancing etc, you would think there never had been a pandemic. Coming back I then wondered if we had been over cautious down here, but better safe than sorry.

I think we may be in the "second wave" now, I'm sure the "first wave" ever really went away.

Are there still many on furlough? It seems to have come to a natural end here (most people working in tourism, and a lot of tourists here now).

We are mostly leisure industry here, so it is difficult to judge the national picture.

We are fully immersed in it. Most folks are now saying they've not seen it this busy before - but it is bringing much needed money in

negative impact in my location, tourists stick to the coast and we are in the middle of the county as far away from the coast as its possible to get.

It's the opposite problem here, being on the coast, we are in the thick of it.

So many people are losing their businesses here. Restaurants, Barber Shops, Even Dental offices have CLOSED and won't come back. I think that if a government orders a place to close that they should also freeze the bills and fully support all the people that are laid off for the DURATION of the problem.
Wearing masks, IF they are worn right offer protection to others IF you have an infection. In general, they offer little protection to you. I think that mostly the masks are a placebo for people. It makes them feel safe. They are sadly ignorant.
COVID isn't a death sentence for the majority of the population. They are doing much better in the treatment of it and the mortality rate is dropping. The people that need to avoid it the most are the same people that may not survive any Flu type illness. The mortality rate for the military is way below 1%. Part o the initial high rates were from places like NYC where anyone that died of nearly any illness was reported as a CORONA fatality whether it was or not. It was also high there because of their inferior medical system that became severly overwhelmed.
